Tibet Festival Tours: Lhasa & Central Tibet

The highlights of Central Tibet - visit the great monastaries of Lhasa and Shigatse including the Potala Palace, Jokhang temple and Tashilumpo, residence of the Pancen Lamas. And marvel at the stunning scenery of Yamdrok Tso (the Turquoise lake), high mountain passes and glaciers as well as the historic center of Gyantse with its famous Kumbum.

Time your tour to include one of Tibet's great colourful festivals. Some Tibetan festivals are secular with religious elements (such as New Year), others purely religious; some are celebrated throughout the Tibetan world; others specific to a region or a particular monastery.

The lure of Lhasa, capital on the roof of the world, cannot be under-estimated and it is truly a fascinating city, fully justifying its reputation. Dominated by the awe-inspiring grandeur of the Potala Palace and bustling with pilgrims circling the sacred Jokhang Temple it is a feast for the senses.

Cross the spectacular Khamba-La (pass) with the turquoise waters of the sacred lake, Yamdrok-tso, spread below. Prayer flags, glaciers, snow covered mountain ranges - the scenery is incredible!

Gyantse stands at the junction of trade routes from India and retains the feel of a Tibetan town. The forts and well-protected monasteries of Gyantse, Shigatse and Sakya reveal a not always peaceful history - the riches within, testament to past glory.

Depending on the trip chosen spend an additional night in Gyantse or Shigatse to enjoy the festival here, spend the day in Lhasa joining locals in the park areas to watch Tibetan opera or make a day trip to either Ganden or Tsurphu to watch giant thangkas be unfurled along with traditional cham dancing.
