Most first journeys to Tibet follow the same arc: Lhasa, the Yarlung Valley, then west toward Everest or Kailash. Eastern Tibet is a different trip altogether, with deeper valleys, forested slopes, and a cultural mix that includes Bon sacred sites alongside Buddhist monasteries.
What makes Eastern Tibet different
Head east from Lhasa and the landscape changes quickly. The high, dry plateau gives way to river gorges, pine and rhododendron forest, and snow peaks rising above green valleys. Much of the region sits noticeably lower than Lhasa, which many travellers find easier on the body.
It’s also a different cultural picture. Bon, Tibet’s pre-Buddhist tradition, remains very much alive here, and Bon sacred sites sit beside Buddhist monasteries in the same valleys. Our Eastern Tibet: The Sacred Sites of Bon itinerary is built around exactly that.
Who Eastern Tibet suits
Eastern loops work best for travellers with more time, often two weeks or longer, and a taste for overland days. Roads can be slower, and distances feel longer than they look on the map, but the scenery rewards patience. We match the vehicle and guide to the route, so you’re not improvising on a mountain road.
If you’ve already done central Tibet, this is the natural next trip. If it’s your first visit, you may prefer to start with the classics. Royal Mountain Travel’s 11-day Tibet Everest Experience covers the western highlights, and you can come back for the east.
Planning notes for Eastern Tibet
Extra permits may apply depending on which prefectures you enter. We confirm these once your dates are firm, and rules can change, so we check them again before departure.
Season matters too. Summer is spectacular and green. Shoulder seasons can mean clearer roads and fewer vehicles on the route. Tell us what matters more, lush scenery or an easier drive, and we’ll suggest timing.
Ways to explore Eastern Tibet
- A dedicated eastbound itinerary. Start in Lhasa and spend the whole trip in the valleys and forests of the east.
- An eastern extension. Add a few days to a central Tibet trip if you’re short on time.
- A river-led route. Our East Along the Brahmaputra journey follows the great river through the region.
