Monasteries are working religious communities, not open-air museums. A little etiquette goes a long way — and your guide will brief you before each visit.
Inside chapels
Walk clockwise where that is the custom. Ask before photographing statues or monks. Some halls ban cameras entirely; others allow photos without flash. Hats off, voices low, and follow your guide’s lead on where to sit or stand.
Dress and offerings
Shoulders and knees covered is a simple rule of thumb. If you wish to leave an offering, your guide can explain the local custom. We never pressure guests into religious participation — curiosity and respect are enough.
Travelling with a Tibetan guide means you hear context as well as rules: who lived here, which festival fills the courtyard, why a particular chapel matters.
